Looking to troubleshoot your Steam games that won't load up?

If you've used any tools in the past to modify your Steam client in any way, those may be preventing the game from launching correctly. To resolve the problem, please try the following guide.

First try cleaning the Steam installation by following the steps below:

  • Exit Steam and make sure it's not running on your system tray
    • In the menu bar, on the top right of the Steam window, go to Steam > Exit
    • Or right click on the Steam icon in the taskbar and choose to Exit Steam
  • Move the steamapps folder to another location (for example your Desktop) – this will help avoid having to redownload your games later in the process
    • Optional: For a more complete approach, you can just delete everything in the Steam folder, but you will need to redownload all games
    • The default Steam folder path is the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
  • Reinstall Steam
  • If you moved the steamapps folder, move it back to the Steam installation folder
  • Start Steam and login
  • Install the game that is having trouble
    • Once you have moved the steamapps folder back, clicking on "Install" will not download, but it will just validate the game files in the folder – nice and easy!
    • However, if the Optional deletion was complete, you may need to wait for the game to download and install again
  • Run the game

Note: If you didn’t try the Optional steps and this doesn’t resolve your issue, head back up to the top and use the full deletion steps.

If those steps above do not solve the issue, try cleaning the game installation by following the steps below:

  • Delete everything in game folder
    • Right click on the game in your Steam Library > Manage > Browse local files
    • A window with the game folder will pop up (the window might pop up behind Steam, in which case you can minimize Steam to find it)
    • Select all the files and delete them
  • Reinstall the game that is having trouble
    • Right click on the game in your Steam Library > Properties
    • In the game's Properties section go to Installed Files
    • Click on "Verify integrity of games files" button

If the above doesn't solve the issue, then your issue is not related to Steam Modification tools. In that case, please read the guide PC General Troubleshooting for 2K Games for assistance.
